How to Make a Cheap Cat Fence
74Simple Instructions for Your Cat Fence
It should be intuitive to you to build a cat fence with these materials. Your fence may be more attractive than mine. I had two needs so built two types of cat fences.
Materials you will need.
1. U Shaped Nails
2. Hammer
3. Ornamental Wire Fencing-.with prongs that normally stick into the ground. These come individually, in rolls, or in a folded variety. I found mine at K-Mart. It cost about 3-4 dollars for 10 feet of fencing. The green fencing I bought in a roll at a garage sale
4. Wire cutters
Cat Fence #1. The first need I had was to keep the cat from walking on the top of the wood railing, so he couldn't jump over the fence. I put the white folded fence along inside of the railing by first attaching the U shaped nails and inserting the prongs into them. It helps to have a helper if you have the rolled or folded type of fence. This kept him in for quite awhile, until his diet started working and he began leaping up to the cross beam on the wood fence. Thus, the need for :
Cat Fence #2. I took the green rolled fencing and put the U shaped nails on the horizontal beam. Then I inserted the progs into the nails and hooked the prongs upward so that if he jumped, he wouldn't stick himself on the prong. I will grow a vine up the fence which will ultimately cover the fencing. You will also note in the pictures, that in case he was climbing up the fence post, I had put a plastic bag on the post, so that he couldn't cling to it. However, those will be removed, as he isn't climbing posts. You should have seen his surprise, when he first tried to leap up to the horizontal beam. No problems since. Ideas about cat fencing. If you use the kind of plastic supports that go around the bottom of an electric wire fence, that hold the wire (available cheaply at a farm supply) and string any kind of netting between them, that would work, but that is too much work for me as you have to screw them in. Netting could be fabric, voile, plastic or landscape netting used to control erosion. If you need to extend the fence from say 5 feet to 6 or 6 to 7 feet, simply stick in a U shaped nail into the fence and insert the pronged fencing on the vertical to extend the height of the fence. These ornamental fences can also replace chicken wire or other wire you would stick around the bottom of the fence, as long as the cat is not small enough to slip through the openings.

It looks like the horizontal fence extends out about 6 or 7 inches, is that right?
Charlie is so handsome! I'm glad that people are loving their cats enough to keep them away from harm.
RIP Charlie, his big old heart gave out, but hopefully this fence will go on to protect more cats, so they can be loved while loving the outdoors. Thanks for the inspiration.
